I've bought a lot of desk chairs in my life and this is the first time I ever bought one I hadn't sat in first. I have a back injury but I also work all day at my desk so the chair I sit in is very, very important. Any of you out there with back problems know what I'm talking about.
This chair is great, whether I'm typing on my computer(s), working on my desk, or just want to lean back and watch a movie or a video. It's fully adjustable for anything I want to adjust. The lumbar support and head rest have enough range of travel that I can get everything just right. I would say though, if you're a smaller person that might not be the case. I'm 6' and 250 lbs. and I'd say that if you're shorter than about 5'6" you'll really hate this chair. If you're bigger than me it should be no problem unless you're a LOT bigger than me. This chair is quite large and it's built for Americans, as opposed to little tiny Asians, Europeans, etc. Even so, to be comfortable I have the seat and armrests maxed out for height. At full height I can sit with my knees bent at a 90 degree angle and my feet flat on the floor but I have long legs. The seat is wider than I actually need it to be but that's fine with me. The padding in the seat is very firm but very comfortable over long periods, it's thick enough that I don't get sore from the foam being compressed to the point where the bones in my bottom rest on the seat structure instead of foam padding. For people with back problems, the whole chair is large enough that I can shift my position as needed to avoid back fatigue. Everyone is built differently so no matter what, buying a chair you haven't sat in is a gamble. Luckily for me this time it paid off.
There is a LOT of range in the prices asked for this chair. The MSRP is around $480, but then MSRP's are purposely set high so that retailers can make you feel like you're getting a bargain. I first saw this chair on another, unrelated site that deals with computers and electronics, think fresh poultry products and you might be able to guess the site if you're familiar with computer component vendors. On that site they wanted $380 for this same chair. So I decided to go see what Amazon could dig up and on Amazon the price ranged from $400 to $180. So a bit of diligence is called for if you want to get the best deal available. I'm not positive even so that I did get the best deal but when I hit $300 below MSRP I went ahead and bought it. I was really surprised that the price on Amazon would vary by as much as $220 and you already know which way I went on the purchase. From what I've seen basically add $100 for the leather seat, mesh frame coverings on the backrest and headrest. I'm good with everything being cloth mesh, it's cooler and doesn't stick to my skin. Also it's been my experience that leather will eventually pull away from the sewing on some of the seams which detracts from an otherwise nice chair.
Make SURE that you're actually looking at an Office Star SPACE series chair, there are knockoffs out there that are very similar and they're cheap. Office Star is a legitimate line of quality office furniture and this review applies only to the Office Star SPACE series model 55403 chair.
From the research I've done prior to purchasing, this chair is generally rated for 8 hours of daily use and the quaility of the materials is rated to last about 5-8 years. Now I don't know how accurate all of that is so take it with a grain of salt and not as a fact.
I've never owned a mesh back chair before and one thing that really surprised me is how cool it is on my back. I don't mean like "my back doesn't heat up anymore because of the mesh", I mean like "my back feels much cooler than the rest of me". It's really nice when it's warm in the room and unnoticible when it's cooler, darn near like having a mini-airconditioner of some sort just for your back. I'm sure this is due to evaporative cooling and though I haven't tried it I'll bet the effect is even more pronounced with a fan blowing on the back of the chair. If you're using this somewhere that it's warm you'll really appreciate this feature.
The chair looks even better in real life than it does in the pictures. It's appearance leaves no doubt that it's a serious piece of gear. It looks like something from a space movie so I guess it lives up to it's name, it definately fits with my high-tech office environment.
It appears to be very well made of high quality materials. Assembly took maybe 10 minutes with a cordless drill and appropriate driver attachments/bits and a socket set with a ratchet. The directions are very easy to follow and assembly was extremely easy. A definate sign of quality is that all the screws came with a patch of lock-tite on them to lock them down once in place. Lock-tite keeps the screw from backing out with repeated multi-axis stress and loose screws decrease the life of the chair. The tension control is very easy to adjust as is the tilt/lock control. All of the metal parts are of a very sturdy thick steel, the plastic parts appear very sturdy also. One thing I've experienced with cheaper chairs is low quality and poor design of the gas strut and it's mount that holds the seat at whatever height you set. A lot of times when you lean back to the full extent the chair is capable of the gas strut valve gets cammed into the open position and you get this sinking feeling as the chair slowly lowers. That hasn't been a problem with this chair, I'm a pretty big guy and it stays right where I set it which is very nice.
A suggestion for everyone from past experience, if you want your chair to last, get those screws TIGHT. Tighten them until you think they're tight and then tighten them some more. Those are very heavy threads and they'll take it but be careful not to strip out the driver slot(s) in the top of the screw. If they're made to take a socket driver get out your ratchet and finish the tightening with that. The tighter it is the less play there will be and the longer the chair will hold up. I've seen very good chairs that weren't put together right fall apart eventually. That's not the chair's fault, it's not a result of poor quality materials, and it's not the manufacturer's fault, it's the fault of the person that bought and assembled the chair. Incidentally, if you ever buy a "show room model" assume it wasn't assembled correctly and tighten everything up. The instructions for this chair emphasize getting the screws tight, which is another sign of manufacturing excellence. They don't want you to be unhappy with your chair because you didn't put it together right.
So, I'm really happy with this chair as of right now. Will it last? Will it hold up to daily, heavy use? I don't know yet, but I don't have any reason so far to think it won't.
